New Name – Vessel
Following Paul’s instruction to Timothy to serve as a “good soldier” he continues with additional comparisons which illustrate the nature of a faithful follower of Jesus.
Paul will add to his discussion of a soldier the images of: a rule-following athlete and a hard-working farmer. Both offer additional perspectives to a believer’s faithfulness.
In the context, Paul will add yet another helpful word picture to aid in understanding what God considers His faithful followers to be – vessels of honor.
In this lesson we look at three concepts about being such a vessel: 1) the purity necessary to serve in this capacity, 2) the personal responsibility involved in creating a vessel purified for God’s use, and 3) the God-directed purposes for which a vessel is made ready for honorable use.
