Going Beyond Individual Spiritual Inclinations

Why are there so many religious groups all claiming to be following Jesus Christ while characterized by division, dogmas, and disagreements. 

This is a worthy and appropriate spiritual question.  One part of the answer may be as simple as: people make their religious choices based upon their own likes or dislikes. 

However, when one looks openly and evaluates Scripture does it reveal that personal choice SHOULD play a major role in things spiritual?  Or do the pages of God’s Word MINIMIZE the role personal opinions play in serving God appropriately?   Or could it be that the Bible actually warns against any personal choices which deviate from the directives of Deity?
